About the Texas STAAR

STAAR is the Texas state test, written to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Students take reading language arts and math every year from grade 3 to grade 8, plus science in grades 5 and 8 and social studies in grade 8. In high school, five end-of-course (EOC) exams count toward graduation.

Which grades and subjects take the Texas STAAR

State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), run by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

  • βœ“Grades 3-8: reading language arts (RLA) and mathematics every year
  • βœ“Grades 5 and 8: science. Grade 8: social studies
  • βœ“High school end-of-course (EOC): Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology and U.S. History

Format and timing

STAAR has been taken online since the December 2022 EOC administration, with paper versions only for students who qualify. Grades 3-8 tests are given in spring windows in April and May, and EOCs are also offered in December and June so students can retest. Check TEA's testing calendar for this year's exact dates.

Question types

  • Multiple choice plus newer item types from the 2023 redesign: multiselect, multipart, hot text, hot spot, inline choice, drag-and-drop, equation editor and text entry
  • Short constructed responses
  • An extended constructed response (an essay) on every RLA test, written in response to reading

What the results are used for

To graduate, students must reach Approaches Grade Level or higher on all five EOCs. Big change ahead: under House Bill 8 (2025), STAAR is due to be replaced from the 2027-28 school year by three shorter tests spread across the year (beginning, middle and end of year) for grades 3-8, and the English II EOC ends from 2027-28, although the classes of 2026 and 2027 still need it to graduate.

For parents

The biggest jump for many Texas students since the redesign is the written response. Even in grade 3, children answer in writing about what they read, so short, regular practice writing a paragraph that uses evidence from a passage pays off. In the parent-managed study portal your child can practice STAAR-style reading questions, math problems and short written answers, with hints instead of answers if you switch on No Answers Mode.

For teachers

Use the test generator to build STAAR-style quizzes on a TEKS student expectation, mixing multiple choice, multiselect and constructed response, with an answer key. Worksheets and exit tickets can target readiness and supporting standards, and the same set can be regenerated at a different reading level for intervention groups.

Texas STAAR - FAQ

Is STAAR being replaced?
Yes, from the 2027-28 school year under House Bill 8 (2025). Texas will move to three shorter tests across the year for grades 3-8 instead of one end-of-year STAAR. Until then STAAR continues, and the skills it tests, TEKS-aligned reading, writing and math, stay the same.
Does STAAR still have essays?
Yes. Since the 2023 redesign every STAAR RLA test includes an extended constructed response, an essay written in response to a reading passage, alongside short constructed responses.

Texas STAAR is for Grades 3-8 and high school EOC in Texas. LessonHQ pitches every question at exactly that level.
What does the practice cover?
Reading language arts (RLA) and math, grades 3-8; Science in grades 5 and 8, social studies in grade 8; End-of-course: Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, U.S. History. Every set comes with answers, and in the portal you can keep the answers locked behind a parent PIN.
