Illinois tests ELA and math in grades 3-8 with the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR), written to the Illinois Learning Standards. Science is tested in grades 5 and 8 with the Illinois Science Assessment, and high school students take the ACT in grade 11, with PreACT tests in grades 9 and 10.
Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR), Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) and high school ACT, run by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
The IAR is given online or on paper in a spring window (March to mid-April) and is not computer-adaptive, so every student at a grade sees the same form. Math is three units of 60 minutes each; ELA is two units of 75 minutes in grade 3 and 90 minutes in grades 4-8. The ISA has three sections, and from 2025-26 each section has a 90-minute limit. Illinois moved its high school test from the SAT to the ACT starting in spring 2025.
IAR and ISA results are used to report student progress and for school accountability, not to decide whether a student graduates. In August 2025 ISBE approved new unified performance levels across its tests: Above Proficient, Proficient, Approaching Proficient and Below Proficient.
Set Illinois in your profile and everything is written to Illinois's standards and test style.
Worksheets on any Illinois standard, at the right grade, with an answer key. Regenerate at an easier or harder level for small groups.
Make a worksheet βPractice tests and quizzes that mix the question types students will see, with answer keys, ready to print or share.
Make a practice test βIn the parent-managed study portal, students practice in the real test style with hints, while parents keep answers behind a PIN.
See the study portal βThe IAR's Prose Constructed Response asks children to read one or more texts and write an organized response with evidence, which is a step up from short answers. Regular practice writing a paragraph about something they have read helps most. The study portal generates IAR-style reading sets with a writing prompt and multi-step math with explanations, with answers kept behind your parent PIN.
Use the test generator to make IAR-style practice: a paired-text reading set with a Prose Constructed Response prompt, or math tasks that ask students to justify their reasoning, aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards and with an answer key. For grade 11, build ACT-style English, math, reading and science practice.
