LessonHQ uses AI to help teachers create resources faster. This page explains exactly how - so schools can assess it accurately. LessonHQ is a teacher resource tool, not a student-facing chatbot.
What is sent to AI
- Only what the teacher types or uploads for that resource is sent to the AI provider: the topic and curriculum settings (e.g. "Photosynthesis, KS3 Science") and the text of any PDF, Word or PowerPoint file they upload as a source.
- Tools that work with pupil work (the Marking Assistant and Report Writer) send only the pupil answer or first name the teacher enters. We advise using first names or initials only.
- No account details (email, password, payment or Google data) are ever included in AI requests.
- AI requests happen server-side - the browser never talks directly to an AI provider.
How it flows
Teacher types a topic (or uploads a file) → LessonHQ server → AI provider generates the draft → result returned → saved to the teacher's account. The teacher reviews and edits before use.
Providers & retention
- Generation uses a fallback cascade of established AI providers (e.g. Cerebras, Groq, Google, Cloudflare, OpenRouter) - listed on Subprocessors.
- Welsh, Irish and Scottish Gaelic resources are written in English and then translated. Welsh is translated on our own server; Irish (and any Welsh sentence our checks flag) uses Microsoft Azure Translator in the UK, and Scottish Gaelic uses Google Cloud Translation. These services receive the lesson text only, never pupil or account details. Translation models: Welsh by Bangor University's Language Technologies Unit (Apache 2.0), with OPUS-MT (University of Helsinki, CC BY 4.0) as our own backup for Irish and Scottish Gaelic. Spanish (US) resources are written directly by the AI provider. Machine translation can make mistakes, so please check the wording before use.
- Generated content is stored in the teacher's LessonHQ account and can be deleted by them.
- Teachers are advised to review all AI-generated material before classroom use. Our own review of the LessonHQ library shows why, and what we changed: see why AI lesson tools aren't as accurate as you think.
Academic integrity
LessonHQ is not a cheating, essay-writing or plagiarism tool. It does not write students' assignments, sell essays, or produce answer keys for students to copy.
- The teacher tools generate original, editable teaching resources (lesson plans, worksheets, slides) that teachers review and adapt - not student submissions.
- The parent-managed student study portal is built for learning, not shortcuts: its default "No Answers Mode" gives step-by-step hints and explanations that build understanding, never copy-paste answers. See the Student Portal.
- The portal is parent-controlled, aligned to real curricula and exam specifications, and designed to support - not replace - a student's own work.
For filtering: LessonHQ should be categorised as Education / Educational Technology. It is used by teachers to prepare lessons; it is not a general-purpose AI assistant, a student chatbot, or a cheating/plagiarism service.
