What this exit ticket template is for

An exit ticket is a two-minute check at the end of a lesson: every student answers a short question on a slip before they leave, and you sort the slips to see who has it, who nearly has it and who needs reteaching tomorrow. It is the fastest formative assessment there is.

The printable version fits four tickets on a page with dashed cut lines. Each ticket asks what was learned, what is still unclear and one question of your choice, then finishes with a 1 to 5 confidence scale. The PowerPoint version has three editable slides you can project instead of printing.

What's on the template

  • Four exit tickets per page with dashed cut lines
  • Name and date on every ticket
  • Three prompts: one thing I learned, one thing I'm still unsure about, and today's question
  • A 1 to 5 confidence scale with a plain-English key
  • PowerPoint: classic three-question slide, 3-2-1 slide and confidence check slide, all editable

How to use it

  1. Print one page per four students and cut along the dashed lines before the lesson.
  2. Write today's question on the board or type it into question 3 before printing. Make it answerable in under two minutes.
  3. Hand out the slips in the last five minutes and collect them at the door, so every student answers.
  4. Sort the slips into three piles: got it, nearly, not yet. That takes about three minutes for a class of 30.
  5. Use the piles to plan the start of the next lesson: a quick reteach for the 'not yet' group, extension for the rest.

Tips from the classroom

  • Ask one question that tests the objective directly. A hinge question with a common wrong answer is ideal.
  • Keep it anonymous-optional for confidence ratings if you want honest answers, but always ask for names on the content question.
  • Use the PowerPoint 3-2-1 slide on days when paper is not practical; students can answer on sticky notes or mini whiteboards.
  • Do not mark them in detail. The value is in the sorting and in changing tomorrow's lesson, not in written feedback.

Frequently asked questions

What questions should go on an exit ticket?

One question that checks the lesson objective directly, plus a quick reflection such as 'one thing I learned' and 'one thing I'm still unsure about'. A confidence scale helps you spot students who got the right answer by luck.

How many exit tickets fit on a page?

Four. The printable template has four tickets per page with dashed cut lines, so one page covers four students.

Can I project it instead of printing?

Yes. Download the PowerPoint version: it has a classic three-question slide, a 3-2-1 slide and a confidence check slide, all fully editable.

Can LessonHQ write exit ticket questions for my lesson?

Yes. The exit ticket generator writes questions for your topic and grade, including a hinge question and answers, ready to print or project.
